From
milepost 392 to mile post zero you will experience
an increase in altitude of some 3,000 feet. Across
the state there is no better area to travel if
you have a love for geology, the pre-historic
times, and other treasures or Mother Nature. Roadside
geology and beauty can be seen as you travel at
almost every milepost.
In addition to the geological beauty of this region
there are many points of historical interest which
allow the traveling person to relive the days
of the Iowa, Sac and Fox, the Kickapoos, Pawnees,
and the warring tribes of the Cheyennes. Northern
Kansas is truly where the west began and expanded.
It is the route of the Pony Express, operating
from 1860 to 1861, which parallels US 36 across
northeast Kansas. Starting at St. Joseph, Missouri
the Pony Express ran through Marysville, Kansas
and continued to Sacramento, California . US 36
is the crossing point of many of the trails, such
as the Oregon Trail and several cattle trails
that criss-crossed this area.
